What type of UV lamp is installed on your press?
The question seemed obvious.
But the more we thought about it, the more interesting it became.
Every day, thousands of operators start up UV curing systems and produce labels, packaging, coatings, and industrial products with outstanding quality.
They know their press.
They know their inks.
They know their substrates.
They know their production speeds.
But when the conversation turns to the UV curing system, the answers are often less certain.
- Is it a mercury lamp?
- Is it iron-doped or gallium-doped?
- Is it a UV LED system?
- If it’s LED, is it 365, 385, 395, or 405 nm?
- How many operating hours does it have?
- What was its output when it was new?
Those answers matter.
Not only when curing problems appear, but long before they do.
Without a baseline, it’s difficult to know whether your UV system is delivering the same performance today that it delivered six months—or even a year—ago.
Over the years, we’ve learned that curing issues are not always caused by the ink, the substrate, or the operator.
Sometimes, the real problem is much simpler:
No one truly knows the current condition of the UV system.
And perhaps this reflection goes beyond UV curing.
There is a significant difference between using equipment and understanding it.
The best decisions in manufacturing, maintenance, and quality control usually begin with the right questions—not just the right answers.
