FOIL IS DIFFERENT FROM METALLIC INK
Look at today’s packaging.
Gold. Silver. Copper. Mirror effects. Metallic colors.
More and more packaging designs are incorporating foil to achieve effects that are difficult to reproduce with conventional metallic inks.
But does that mean foil is better than metallic ink?
Not necessarily.
They are simply different technologies.
Metallic ink creates its visual effect through reflective particles dispersed within the ink film.
Foil creates a much more continuous metallic surface, capable of producing significantly higher brilliance and reflection.
But brilliance is only one part of the decision.
When a printer moves from metallic ink to foil, other variables may change:
Process
Equipment
Capital investment
Press configuration
Production time
Setup
Materials and consumables
Waste
Operator training
Technical knowledge
Quality control
Supply chain
Total cost
A more sophisticated process can create extraordinary visual results.
But it can also introduce additional interfaces and variables that must be understood and controlled.
Every layer adds functionality.
Every interface adds risk.
So perhaps the right question isn’t:
Which one is better — foil or metallic ink?
Perhaps the better question is:
Which technology delivers the result we need at a level of cost, complexity and process control we can manage?
Because selecting a printing technology should never be based on appearance alone.
The more sophisticated the structure, the more interfaces you need to control.
